Test positivity rate falls to 17.39%
COVID-19 spread appears to have slowed down considerably in the capital district after nearly a month of lockdown. The test positivity rate fell to 17.39% on Monday as 1,750 people tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from among the 10,059 who were subjected to tests during the last 24 hours. The active cases count also decreased to 14,587 when 2,924 recovered from the illness. While most of the fresh cases have been attributed to local transmission of the infection, the source of infection was unknown in 92 cases. Six health workers were among those who were diagnosed with the disease.
The Union and State governments provided support in several ways to the needy people, but private institutions should also extend help, especially to those requiring medical assistance, said C.P. Rajkumar, Managing Director, Nalam Multispeciality Hospital, here on Saturday. Speaking at a function to honour Inspector General of Police V. Balakrishnan and neurologist S. Meenakshisundaram with C. Palaniappan Memorial Award for their contribution to society and Nalam Kappom medical adoption of Type-1 diabetic children, he said the governments implemented numerous welfare programmes, but the timely help by a private hospital or a doctor in the neighbourhood to the people in need would go a long way in safeguarding their lives.
