A beach outing turned into a surreal encounter for a woman after she and her family spotted two rare deep-sea oarfish – often dubbed “doomsday fish” – near the shore in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Monica Pittenger shared a video of the moment on Instagram as she explained, “I didn’t believe my eyes. It was something out of a fiction movie. I have never seen anything like it before. I just remember thinking, ‘Is this real?’ And honestly, when I saw the second one, I got a little nervous. What’s going on? There’s two.”
She said they first noticed a bright, flashing shape in the distance in the water. As the creature came closer to the beach, the group realised it was unlike anything they had seen before.
Pittenger said that her sister immediately rushed to help when one of the fish appeared to be in distress.
“My sister just cannot stand anything in pain. She reacted superfast. She threw me her phone, her drink and her bag and said, ‘Hold this,’ and dived in,” she recalled.
While many onlookers hesitated because they were unsure what the creature was, Pittenger said her sister and a few others helped push the fish back into the water.

When we look at Iran through the prism of religion and see a Shia Islamic country, we negate its thousands of years of rich pre-Islamic Persian culture. A dive into the world of Zoroastrianism and Vedas shows us how Indians and Iranians have been sharing languages, Gods, sciences and a sacred fire for thousands of years.
