WhatsApp Web finally gets voice and video calling support
India Today
WhatsApp has started rolling out native voice and video calls on its web app, ending years of limitations for browser-based users. Here are the details.
For years, WhatsApp Web has played a supporting role to the company’s mobile and desktop apps. It offered convenience for typing messages on a bigger screen, but stopped short of replacing the full WhatsApp experience. That gap is now starting to close. WhatsApp has begun rolling out native voice and video calling support on its web app, allowing users to make calls directly from their browser without downloading any additional software. The update is a major change in how WhatsApp Web is positioned, especially for users who spend most of their time on a computer.
The web version, which launched in 2015, has long been seen as a lighter companion to WhatsApp’s main apps. While Windows and Mac users have had access to audio and video calling since 2021, browser users were left out. With this update, WhatsApp Web finally starts offering a more complete communication experience, bringing it closer to parity with its desktop counterparts.
According to details shared by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is now enabling voice and video calls directly on WhatsApp Web. Users who receive the update will notice dedicated call buttons inside individual chats, placed at the top of the conversation window. Starting a call works in much the same way as on the desktop apps, with users choosing between a voice call or a video call with a single click.
At this stage, calling support is limited to one-to-one conversations. WhatsApp is reportedly still refining the feature to ensure a smooth and stable experience before expanding availability. Group calling is not available yet, but it is expected to be added at a later stage once the initial rollout settles.
Importantly, WhatsApp Web calling does not dilute the platform’s focus on privacy. Voice and video calls made through the browser continue to be protected with end-to-end encryption, using the same Signal protocol that secures WhatsApp communications across devices. This means users get the same level of protection on the web as they do on mobile and desktop.
The update also introduces screen sharing during video calls, a feature that mirrors what WhatsApp already offers on its Windows and Mac apps. This could make WhatsApp Web more useful for work-related conversations, quick presentations, or remote assistance.

Reddit is exploring biometric verification methods such as Face ID and Touch ID to ensure users are real humans, not bots, while pledging to maintain the platform's tradition of anonymity. CEO Steve Huffman said the company is planning to address the rising influence of AI-generated content and protect authentic user engagement.

In a push towards more inclusive school environments, the Central Board of Secondary Education has rolled out fresh directives on menstrual hygiene across its affiliated institutions. The move comes after a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of India that places menstrual health within the framework of fundamental rights.
