West Bengal receives 26,000 applications for student credit cards

Nearly 6,059 applications are from students who hail from West Bengal but are studying outside the State; around 16,800 applicants are males and 9,700 are females, an official said.
The West Bengal government has so far received over 26,000 applications for the student credit card scheme under which loans of up to ₹10 lakh will be disbursed for higher studies, a senior official said on Tuesday. The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee last month to help needy students pursue higher studies. Of the over 26,000 applications received till last week, nearly 6,059 are from students who hail from West Bengal but are studying outside the State, he said, adding around 16,800 applicants are males and 9,700 are females.The election authorities are gearing up for the counting of votes cast in the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled to be held on June 4. The Collectors and Election Officers of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts said on May 23 (Thursday) that their teams were ready for the counting of votes.
Responding to the prolonged water scarcity, the residents of the area took to the streets in protest on Wednesday. The protest, which drew attention to their plight, stopped only after the intervention of the police. It was not until 1.30 p.m. that a 4000-litre tanker was finally delivered by BWSSB, providing relief to the water-starved residents.
