We tracked all Indian vessels near the Strait of Hormuz

We tracked all Indian vessels near the Strait of Hormuz

India Today
Monday, March 16, 2026 02:03:13 PM UTC

India Today's OSINT team identified at least 22 Indian-flagged vessels operating in the Gulf region, including seven LPG carriers, seven oil tankers, four container ships, two bulk carriers, one tug and one dredger.

As the concerns over LPG supply deepens, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview that the strait is “only closed to the tankers and ships belonging to our enemies; others are free to pass.”

During a media briefing on Monday, Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary at the Ministry of Shipping, said two LPG tankers — Shivalik and Nanda Devi — are expected to arrive at Gujarat’s Mundra and Kandla ports today and tomorrow, while 22 Indian vessels remain stranded near the strait. Indian-Flagged LPG Tanker Shivalik docks at Mundra port after Hormuz transit amid West Asia conflict

Two other oil tankers, Jag Prakash and Desh Vibhor, have also passed through the Strait of Hormuz, according to ship-tracking data from VesselFinder reviewed by India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team. A third Indian-flagged cargo vessel was also seen on ship-tracking platforms crossing the strait overnight. Other Indian-flagged vessels, two crude oil tankers and one cargo ship, also crossed the Strait of Hormuz, according to ship-tracking platforms.

India Today tracked the vessels’ positions to map their transit across the Strait of Hormuz. While Nanda Devi was stationed near Iran’s Qeshm Island, Shivalik was earlier seen in a tight cluster with vessels such as Desh Vaibhav and Pine Gas, which remained stranded near the strait. The crude oil tanker Jag Laadki, however, did not cross Hormuz waters. Ship-tracking data shows it was docked at Fujairah port in the Gulf of Oman before being escorted by the Indian Navy across the Arabian Sea.The vessels Desh Vibhor and Jag Prakash appear to have transited the Strait of Hormuz on the VesselFinder platform, though their latest positions were not visible on MarineTraffic. Jag Prakash, carrying gasoline loaded at Oman’s Sohar port, was headed to Tanga in Tanzania, with an expected arrival on March 21. Using data from the ship-tracking platform MarineTraffic, India Today identified at least seven LPG tankers that have remained in the Persian Gulf over the 17 days since the war began. Three of them, Jag Vasant, Pine Gas and Green Sanvi, appear next in line to cross the Strait of Hormuz, while four others remain stranded west of the chokepoint. Indian flagged vessels in the gulf region

India Today analysed ship-tracking data to identify at least 22 vessels operating in the Gulf region. Platform classifications show seven LPG carriers, seven oil tankers, four container ships, two bulk carriers, one tug and one dredger. The latest tracking data indicates that at least three of these vessels, one bulk carrier and two crude oil tankers, have since crossed the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Gulf of Oman.Indian-flagged dredger VOLVOX OLYMPIA is stationed at Dubai port. The vessel dredges seabed sediment using suction pipes and stores it in an onboard hopper. As per the ministry’s statement, vessels stranded west of the Strait of Hormuz include six LPG tankers, one LNG carrier, four crude oil tankers, one chemical products tanker, three container ships, two bulk carriers and one dredger. Earlier, 28 Indian-flagged vessels were reported in the Gulf region, with 24 located west of the strait. The number of vessels stranded west of the Gulf now stands at 22, as of Monday. Two vessels, Pushpak and Parimal, managed by Indian companies, touched Mumbai port last week.
