Was Gautam Gambhir behind the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma? India head coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted at the possible reason while speaking in an event in Kolkata.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted that he probably did not handle his relationship with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma well. Stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket in the first season of Gambhir's coaching tenure, calling time after India's disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Speaking at the Revsportz Conclave in Kolkata, Gambhir was asked how he felt about the media talking about his relationship with Virat and Rohit, with suggestions that things had turned sour between them.
Gambhir did not directly address the issue but admitted that he may have made mistakes. The head coach was quick to defend himself, stating that, like everyone else, he was allowed to make mistakes if his intentions were right.
"I am human, I should be allowed to make mistakes. Players should be allowed to make mistakes. I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months. I do not shy away from that. But I have always believed in one thing: wrong decisions with the right intent are acceptable. But wrong decisions with wrong intent are absolutely not acceptable in that dressing room," Gautam Gambhir said at the event in Kolkata.
"Till the time that I am honest with my dressing room and I can talk to them by looking into their eyes, I think I am doing a fair job in my position," he added.
