India captain Shubman Gill has set his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup, calling it the ultimate target for the team after their heartbreak in the 2023 final. The skipper believes India have another shot at glory.
India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill has said that winning the 2027 ODI World Cup remains the biggest objective for the national team. The skipper admitted the thought often crosses his mind, especially after India narrowly missed the title in 2023.
India had dominated the 2023 World Cup with a flawless run before losing to Australia in the final. Speaking at the BCCI Naman Awards in Mumbai on March 15, Gill said the team still carries the motivation of coming close to the trophy last time.
“Definitely, it does. That is the ultimate goal,” Gill said on Star Sports when asked if he thinks about the next ODI World Cup.
Gill added that the team felt they were only one step away from lifting the trophy in the last edition and now look forward to another opportunity in the next tournament.
“We felt like we were so close last time when we were here in the final in India. To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it's going to be a great opportunity for us,” Gill said.
“Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal so obviously, that is something that sometimes runs in my mind,” he added.
