Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday hit back at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s sharp criticism of the Union Budget, saying the government’s economic direction remains steady and the budget contains multiple measures to protect ordinary citizens from global volatility.
Sitharaman presented her ninth straight Union Budget in Parliament earlier in the day, with key focus on infrastructure, AI, easing tax filings, boosting domestic manufacturing, and defence spending among others.
Responding to Gandhi’s tweet calling for "course correction", Sitharaman said she was unclear about what exactly the Congress leader meant.
"I don’t know what course correction he is referring to. The economy and its fundamentals are strong," she said, underlining that several sectors are facing uncertainty worldwide.
The Finance Minister said the budget had introduced targeted schemes to support those most vulnerable to external shocks.
"Global uncertainty is facing many of our sectors, for whom we have brought in so many different schemes for those small and medium enterprises, for textiles, for leather, schemes for benefiting them, for even the farmer and value addition, for women entrepreneurs, self-help entrepreneurs," she said.
