India Today
Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan is in a legal standoff with the Central Board of Film Certification. But, controversies are not new to Vijay, whose career has navigated its fair share of troubles over the years.
Thalapathy Vijay has had an influential career as an A-lister of Tamil cinema over the years. The actor, who has been hinting at his political ambitions through his films, finally took the step of floating his own political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in 2024. Now, not just on the political front, the actor is facing serious issues on the film front as well.
Vijay announced that his latest film, director H Vinoth's Jana Nayagan, would be his last film before he takes up full-time politics. However, the film, which was slated for a grand release on January 9, is now stuck in a legal dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over the non-issuance of a censor certificate.
While Jana Nayagan's release is still uncertain, it also places a lens on Vijay's career, where his films have courted several controversies – financial, ideological and political – that have probably pushed him one step closer to founding his political party.
From his 50th film, Sura, to his farewell film, Jana Nayagan, let us have a look at Vijay's movies that have been embroiled in controversies.
Controversies aren't new to actor Vijay. The earliest news of a controversy dates back to 2010 when Vijay's 50th film, Sura, was titled Sura – The Leader. At that time, there were objections raised by certain sections about the film's tagline. To avoid further complications, the makers decided to drop the tagline and release the film simply as Sura.
Being Vijay's 50th film, Sura witnessed heightened expectations among fans. However, the film received negative reviews and ended up as a damp squib at the box office.
