Nagappan came under a host of accusations, notably nepotism in appointments
The State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM)] on Thursday decided to remove Anavoor Nagappan as the party’s Thiruvananthapuram district secretary and nominate V. Joy, MLA, in his stead.
The CPI(M) district secretariat and committee would convene soon to ratify Mr. Joy’s elevation.
Mr. Nagappan, who steered the party to a thumping victory in the district in the 2021 Assembly elections, had, of late, come under a host of accusations, notably nepotism in appointments to local bodies and institutions under the Cooperation department.
For one, his critics had accused him of seeking a letter from Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran detailing the temporary vacancies available in the Corporation, allegedly to insert party nominees into the post by circumventing the Employment Exchange process.
Ms. Rajendran and Mr. Nagappan have since denied the charge. A police enquiry had absolved them of any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, the Congress has moved the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) against them.
The VACB, in turn, has reportedly sought the government’s sanction to conduct a preliminary inquiry against the duo to establish whether or not they had committed a cognisable offence.
Nevertheless, the charges triggered a month-long protest by the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), culminating in the resignation of former Corporation works standing committee chairman D. R. Anil, a CPI(M) councillor.
The Governor could not have directly granted approval, following complainants seeking direction from a special court for order to conduct an investigation against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam, without securing a preliminary report from the investigating agency concerned, it was argued before the High Court of Karnataka on behalf of the State government.
Amidst Chief Minister Siddaramaiah facing legal challenges in the alleged MUDA scam and his Cabinet colleagues publicly throwing their hat into the ring, sensing a possible change in leadership, two members of the Legislative Council have sought disciplinary action against Ministers for speaking out in public.
The BJP is opposing the setting up of the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority since “the city built by Nadaprabhu Kempe Gowda should not be split and should remain reserved for Kannadigas”, said R. Ashok, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, while participating in a meeting on Monday to discuss the pros and cons of splitting the city into smaller administrative units.
Urging all MPs to reject The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, former Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha K. Rehman Khan has argued that there has never been a legislation that so blatantly reflected prejudice and ill will and has been brought without consultation and due process. He termed it a “deeply prejudiced Bill that will cause irreparable damage to the Waqf system”.
