The facility in New Colony will benefit over 17,000 consumers, say officials
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has opened a new Assistant Engineer (AE) office in New Colony on the western side of Chromepet, offering relief to residents who had long sought a facility for electricity-related services.
The office, inaugurated last week by Pallavaram MLA E. Karunanidhi using funds from the Member of Legislative Assembly Constituency Development Scheme (MLACDS) to the tune of ₹15 lakh, is expected to cater to around 17,500 consumers in areas such as New Colony, Chandra Nagar, Nagappa Nagar and Umayalpuram.

Until recently, residents from these localities had to cross the railway gate at Radha Nagar — prior to the opening of the subway — or use the Vaishnava College gate to reach the TANGEDCO office at Shanthi Nagar for bill payments and other services. Elderly residents, in particular, found the commute difficult.
“This long-pending demand of over 20 years has now been fulfilled. Residents need not cross railway tracks or use foot overbridges anymore,” said Karunanidhi said.
Officials said minor works, including door fittings, are under way and are expected to be completed within a week. The office will be fully operational once the necessary clearance is obtained from the Election Commission.
