Murugan, an SSI attached to the Yercaud police station, was on his rounds on Saturday (March 22, 2025) evening near the Shervaroyan temple when he found two people consuming alcohol in parked a van in the locality.
When the SSI asked the duo to move from the spot, they picked up an argument with him and attacked him, the police said. The SSI sustained injuries to his left hand and was admitted to the Yercaud Government Hospital.
The Yercaud police registered a case and arrested J. Silambarasan, 32, and K. Praveen Kumar, 28, both residents of Melalagapuram in Yercaud. They work as drivers. On Sunday, the duo were remanded in prison.

The Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of passenger fares, effective from December 26, aiming to balance rising operational costs while keeping passenger impact minimal. Suburban services and Monthly Season Ticket holders remain unaffected, while ordinary and AC classes see small increases. The move is expected to generate ₹600 crore in revenue and strengthen safety and efficiency across the railway network.
