CID to investigate Tumakuru man's suspicious death in police custody, announced by Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Friday announced that the probe into suspicious death of a man in Tumakuru while under police detention will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Kantharaju, 50, died at Huliyaru police station on Thursday, hours after he was picked up along with four others on allegations that he was gambling with a group during Ugadi festivities.
According to police sources, the Huliyaru police detained Kantharaju near Siddarameshwara temple within their jurisdiction and brought him to the police station for interrogation around 5.30 p.m. Around 8.30 p.m., Kantharaju complained of respiratory issues and was sent to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
Speaking to mediapersons on Friday, one of the other four persons who was detained said that many others were playing cards and betting, but Kantharaju and the four who were detained were not gambling.
“The officers came in plainclothes in a car and picked us up. Kantharaju was kicked by one of the officers, and although he complained of chest pain, he was not taken to the hospital immediately,” he said. When they finally did, the doctors declared Kantharaju as ‘brought dead’.
Kantharaju’s son has lodged a complaint against the police officers, alleging that they were responsible for his father’s death as he was beaten by them. “My father had gone to the temple to make arrangements for festival rituals. He was not indulging in gambling,” he told press persons.
