A 40-year-old man died after being struck inside a lift in Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on Friday (March 20, 2026). The Opposition accuses the West Bengal government of negligence in State hospitals and calls for a change in the administration.
Arup Bandyopadhyay, a resident of Dum Dum, was at the R.G. Kar Hospital for his son’s treatment when he got trapped in a lift at the trauma care centre. There was no lift operator present at the time of the incident, so the exact cause of the death remains unclear till now.
The lift has been sealed off by the local police and the incident is being further investigated by them. Officials from the West Bengal Health Department also visited the accident site to further investigate the matter.
“They could have saved my son, they have not done it,” the victim’s father said. He has also filed a formal complaint against the incident and accused the hospital authorities of negligence and mismanagement.
The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leadership accused the Trinamool Congress government of neglecting the State healthcare system and infrastructure and said that all of it was due to corruption in the system.
