Traders at Gani Market demand basic amenities from Erode Corporation, threatening indefinite strike if demands not met.
Urging the Erode Corporation to fulfil its promise of providing basic amenities at the E.K.M. Abdul Gani Textile Hub (Gani market) in Panneerselvam Park, traders at the hub closed their shops and submitted a petition to Corporation Commissioner N. Manish on Wednesday. They also threatened to launch an indefinite strike and sit-in-protest inside the hub starting December 9, if their demands were not met.
Traders, under the banner of All Traders in Gani Market New Commercial Complex, are demanding an entrance to the hub from Meenatchi Sundaranar Road, installation of high-mast lights around the hub, placement of chairs in the centre of the hub, installation of shutters on the pathways, effective steps to prevent waterlogging inside the hub during rainy season, installation of an LED screen and a bus stop outside the hub, proper maintenance of toilets, and establishment of a canteen in the hub.
Traders said they had submitted numerous petitions to the civic body seeking basic amenities. Although the civic body assured them that their demands would be met, none of their requests were addressed, they claimed. They threatened to go on an indefinite strike if their demands were not fulfilled. Currently 226 shops are occupied by traders, while 60 shops remain unoccupied.
