Several colleges in the region held their graduation ceremonies for outgoing batches of students last week.
Delivering the convocation address at the Holy Cross College, G.S. Chauhan, joint secretary, University Grants Commission, said acquisition of knowledge should serve as a transformative force which shapes character, leadership and social responsibility. Educationalist Ganga Ram Jamdagni (Shastri), retired principal, Adarsh Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, affiliated to the Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi, was among the special invitees. Sr. Dr. P. Rajakumari, Principal, presented the annual report at the convocation in which 1,937 students received their degrees.
At the 21st convocation ceremony of Bon Secours College for Women in Thanjavur, Manju Khari, dean and professor, School of Computer and Systems Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Ms. Khari emphasised the importance of women empowerment and their role in nation building. About 1,190 students received their degrees.
The Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) unit of Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, participated in the three-day scouting advancement training camp held recently at State Training Centre, Southern Railway Camp site of BSG in Mandapam, Rameswaram. A total of 10 students (Rovers and Rangers) of the college’s BSG unit participated in the camp. The team was led by J. Edwin Moses, assistant professor of English and Rover crew leader and Catherin Meena, assistant professor of Chemistry and Ranger crew leader of the college’s BSG Part V Club. Open-air lecture sessions on scouting, scout laws, leadership and life skills, were among the activities. The training session had over 50 participants from schools and colleges. Scouts and Guides from Sri Sankara School, Pammal, Chennai, Rovers and Rangers from Bishop Heber College, Sree Sastha Engineering College and Annai Violet College, Chennai participated in the training programme. First-year BBA students P. Janani, and Godwin, won medals under Best Leader Ranger/Rover category and Ritheesh and Boopathi, I BCA, won medals in Best Service Rover category. First-year B.Com student Shiwane, and Purusothaman, (I BCA) won medals under Best Active Ranger/Rover category.
Students showcased their innovative ideas and knowledege of Artificial Intelligence during the regional Magic Bus and IBM SkillsBuild ‘AI Sparks – Ideas into Impact’ project presentation and technical quiz competition hosted by National College in Tiruchi recently. Winners were honoured with medals and certificates in recognition of their outstanding performance. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Magic Bus Foundation and National College to strengthen collaboration in the areas of technical training, digital skill development, and placement assistance for students. Devanand Thangaraj, programme manager – IBM Digital Skilling, Magic Bus Foundation, and J. Karthikeyan, Training and Placement Officer, National College, spoke.
Highways Department officials R. Bhuvaneshwari, divisional engineer, D. Gomathi, assistant divisional engineer, and Karthika, assistant engineer, Road Safety Wing, Tiruchi, highlighted road and driving safety measures during an awareness programme organised by Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Tiruchi recently. Students took a pledge to follow traffic rules and act as safety ambassadors.
