Following Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal to launch an anti-radical Hexagon alliance, including India, the Pakistani Parliament's Senate has rushed to unanimously pass a resolution. The resolution tabled by a PPP leader, which is part of PM Shehbaz Sharif's ruling coalition, described the alliance as a threat to the integrity and unity of the Muslim Ummah.
Following Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's pitch for a "hexagon of alliances"—aimed at fighting "radical axes" in the Middle East (Western Asia), a rattled Islamabad has rushed to condemn it, calling it an "anti-Muslim Ummah bloc".
The proposed "hexagon of alliances" grouping, which has named India among the key members, was on Tuesday described by a resolution by the Pakistani Parliament's Senate (the Upper House) as a threat to regional and international peace and stability, reported multiple Pakistani news outlets. The resolution described the pitch as a "vile proclivity of the leadership of the Israeli occupying power towards diminishing the unity and integrity of the Muslim Ummah on political and ideological grounds".
A leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP)—which is an integral part of the PM Shehbaz Sharif-led ruling coalition—"deplored the continued provocative steps and statements by the Israeli leadership that threatened regional and international peace and stability, including the latest statement about forming alliances against Muslim nations," reported Pakistani English daily, The Express Tribune.
Days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day state visit to Israel, Netanyahu said that the security alliance would take on radical Shia and Sunni adversaries in the region. He said that the bloc would include Israel, India, Greece and Cyprus, along with other unnamed Arab, African and Asian nations. Netanyahu's announcement came amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran and Pakistan and Saudi Arabia joining hands for a Nato-like pact, with Turkey looking to join it.
The resolution was introduced by PPP leader Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, in the Senate, Pakistan's upper house of Parliament, and was passed unanimously. The resolution expressed strong disapproval at what it described as continued provocative actions and statements by the Israeli leadership, including comments about creating "alliances" against Muslim countries, reported the Pakistani newspaper, Dawn.
In its resolution, the Senate condemned any attempts by Israel to undermine what it described as the "sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of brotherly Islamic countries".
