
The spirit of Indian Constitution remains strong despite several amendments, says Supreme Court judge

Supreme Court Judge praises Indian Constitution at 75th anniversary event, highlighting its strength and evolving nature.
Supreme Court Judge R. Mahadevan on Saturday extolled the virtues of Indian Constitution.
Participating in an event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Constitution of India and Law Day here, the judge said that even after several amendments the spirit of the Constitution remains strong.
“The Constitution was amended several times. Many new provisions have been incorporated since the inception of the Constitution but it remains strong. The rights of individuals got further strengthened with the introduction of Public Interest Litigation system. We are all duty-bound to protect the Constitution,” Mr. Justice Mahadevan said.
Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, in his address said, “Constitution is not merely a set of laws and guidelines but it is a living testament to the indomitable spirit of people and their unwavering commitment to the ideals of justice, liberty and equality.”
“In the 75 years since it was enacted, the Constitution had been amended 106 times. This gives it a unique distinction of the most amended National Constitution in the world, apart from also being the longest. This dynamic and ever evolving nature of our Constitution is a reflection of the will of the people and their evolving needs. These amendments have strengthened the fabric of our democracy and has ensured that the Constitution remains relevant and responsive to the challenges of our times,” Mr Kailashnathan said.
Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Madras High Court judges Shamim Ahmed, R. Vijayakumar and R. Subramanian, Minister for Law K. Lakshminarayanan and Law Secretary L. S. Sathiyamurthy were also present.
The event was organised by the Law Department and the Puducherry Bar Association.
