A science teacher of a private school in Puducherry has been arrested on the charge of sexual assaulting a six-year-old girl student.
The Thavalakuppam police identified the accused as Manikandan, 25, a resident of Mudaliarpet. The assault came to light after the girl fell sick, and a medical evaluation of the child pointed towards sexual abuse, the police said. The accused has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Shortly after the incident came to the fore on Friday evening, parents and irate villagers gathered near the school and demanded action against the school authorities. They also wanted the school to be shut, alleging the management had failed to prevent sexual exploitation from happening inside the institution. The agitation by the residents went on till late Friday.
The police held talks with the heads of the villages and promised to take stern action against the culprits. The villagers then decided to call off the agitation.
The Students Federation of India (SFI) issued a statement criticising the government for the “poor” safety of students in educational institutions. The sexual assault occurred days after students sustained injuries when the wall of a government school collapsed in Puducherry, the statement said.
