The State government will release ₹200 crore to each of the 10 city municipal corporations, Urban Development minister Byrathi Suresh said in Vijayapura on Friday.
The Congress leader claimed it was the first time such a decision was being taken by the government that could allow implementation of several development projects. He was speaking to reporters after holding a review meeting of various projects in the city.
“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sanctioned a total of ₹2,000 crore for the development of the areas under various city corporations. We hope that the elected bodies and officers will jointly come up with development and expansion programmes with a long-term vision,” he said.
He instructed officials in Vijayapura to take up development works with a deadline. He asked officers to expand the boundaries of the city even if it means buying private land. “Officials should properly study the pros and cons of such proposals and buy private land only if it is absolutely necessary,” he said.
He asked officials to work towards creating new layouts, and to prepare an action plan for this in association with other government bodies.
He said he had issued orders to release development grants of at least ₹4 crore per ward in Vijayapura city. He asked Deputy Commissioner T. Bhoobalan to review all pending projects and ensure their proper implementation.
He responded to a demand by some city corporation members to find a permanent solution to the drinking water problem in their areas. He observed that most areas were getting drinking water once a fortnight and that it would be addressed.
