S Jaishankar spoke with Iran on energy security, can't say more: India talks with Tehran on oil
India has held discussions with Iran on energy security and shipping, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday but declined to share further details amid concerns over possible disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
The MEA spokesperson was responding to questions about reports of Iran allowing oil meant for India to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's conversation with his Iranian counterpart.
Speaking at a press conference, MEA spokesperson said External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar had three conversations with his Iranian counterpart. “In their last conversation they discussed the issue of India’s energy security and shipping. Beyond that it would be premature for me to discuss,” the spokesperson said.
The MEA also provided an update on Indian nationals in Iran, saying that around 9,000 Indians are currently in the country. This includes Indian students, seafarers, businessmen and pilgrims. Many of them have already returned to India following the government’s advisory issued on February 24.
The spokesperson added that after the onset of the conflict, several Indians, particularly students, have been shifted to safer locations. “We are facilitating all Indians who are willing to return back to the country. Our mission is in touch with the Indian community. We are encouraging Indians to return back, those who wish to do so,” the MEA said.
Responding to Pakistan’s allegation that India was responsible for its conflict with Afghanistan, the MEA rejected the claim, calling it baseless.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
