Brook made the comments at the post-match press conference following England's seven-run semi-final defeat to India at the T20 World Cup, with McCullum's future set to dominate the agenda in English cricket over the coming weeks.
England's T20 World Cup campaign was a tournament of two halves. They struggled badly in the early stages, nearly losing to Nepal before suffering a defeat to the West Indies that left their hopes hanging by a thread. Few would have predicted at that point that they would go on to reach the semi-finals. But they found their footing at the right time and strung together the results they needed to make it into the last four.
Brook's promotion to number three was a key moment in that turnaround. The captain scored a commanding century against Pakistan in the Super 8s, giving England the platform and confidence to push deep into the tournament. Jacob Bethell then produced a stunning hundred against India in the semi-final, but England fell seven runs short of reaching the final in what was a thrilling and closely fought contest.
The exit brought McCullum's future back into sharp focus. His position had already been questioned following England's 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, a result that had raised doubts about whether he remained the right man to lead the side forward. Those questions have not gone away despite England's improved showing at this tournament.
