Security heightened in Coimbatore in view of 1998 serial bombings anniversary

Coimbatore increases security measures for 1998 bombings anniversary, deploying 2,000 police personnel and specialized teams across the city.
Coimbatore city came under security blanket from Friday in view of the anniversary of the serial bombings of February 14, 1998 that claimed 58 lives and left 250 persons injured.
A senior police officer said various duties were assigned to 2,000 police personnels, who covered security of vital installations, government offices, sensitive locations and places of worship.
Six teams of the Tamil Nadu Commando Force, each comprising 10 persons, were deployed at different places, including R.S. Puram.
The Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad conducted anti-sabotage checks at Coimbatore railway station, bus stands at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam among other places. The police conducted random vehicle checks at multiple locations. All the patrol units of the police were instructed to be on the move in their designated areas on Friday night and Saturday.
City Police Commissioner N. Kannan and Deputy Commissioners reviewed the security arrangements.
