Erode–Karur and Erode–Kangeyam roads to be widened to four lanes, enhancing connectivity and reducing traffic congestion.
A section of the Erode–Karur (SH 84) road and the Erode–Kangeyam (SH 96) road will be widened from the existing two lane to four lane at a total cost of ₹120.5 crore.
Collector S. Kandasamy on Friday laid the foundation stones for the projects near the newly established bus stand at Solar and at the Perundurai roundabout.
An official of the State Highways Department, which is implementing the projects, said the widening of the Erode–Karur road would be taken up between Solar and Gatepudhur, and from Solangapalayam to Kangeyampalayam, at an estimated cost of ₹55 crore. The upgradation is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and travel time within the city. The road serves as a vital link between Erode and Karur districts, the official added.
In the second project, the Erode–Kangeyam road will be widened from the Perundurai roundabout to Mukasipidariyur, and from Chennimalai Pasuvapatti to Noyyal, at a cost of ₹65.50 crore. The project will include paved shoulders and is expected to ease traffic congestion in Perundurai town. The road connects key centres including Erode, Dharapuram and Palani.
Both projects are being executed under the Integrated Road Development Scheme 2026–27. Officials said the works would be carried out in a phased manner.
Highways Divisional Engineer J.K. Rameshkanna, Assistant Divisional Engineer S. Saravanan, Assistant Engineer R. Mohanasakthi and other officials were present.
