The Anakapalli district police cracked a major house break-in reported from Munagapaka mandal within four days and arrested a habitual offender on Friday. Gold ornaments worth about ₹30 lakh were recovered from his possession. The accused was identified as Kona Rajesh, 23, a resident of Anakapalli.
Addressing a press conference at the district police office, Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha said that on February 15, K. Umavathi of Ganthavanipalem in Munagapaka mandal had gone to a temple to offer prayers on the occasion of Mahasivaratri. During her absence, unidentified persons allegedly broke open the cupboard in her house and decamped with 17.5 tolas of gold ornaments.
Based on her complaint, the Munagapaka police registered a case and launched an investigation. Under the supervision of Parawada DSP V. Vishnu Swaroop, special teams were formed to trace the offender.
Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended Rajesh at Kokiripalli Junction on the night of February 19. The investigation revealed that he was involved in earlier offences as well.
The police recovered 16.5 tolas, weighing 192.3 grams, of gold ornaments from the accused. The value of the recovered property is estimated at ₹30.39 lakh.
Mr. Tuhin Sinha said that proactive policing had led to an improvement in detection and property recovery rates in theft cases in the district. In 2024, the detection rate stood at 46% with 60% property recovery. In 2025, detection improved to 59% and property recovery to 63%. In 2026, in the two grave cases registered so far, the district police achieved 100% detection and 100% property recovery, he said.
