The attack took place on Friday morning when Harpinder, sarpanch of Patto Hira Singh village, arrived at his gym. Four to five attackers travelling in an SUV opened fire at him as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle.
A village sarpanch was killed in a drive-by shooting in a crowded market in Punjab’s Moga district on Friday morning, police said.
The victim was identified as Harpinder Singh, aka Happy, the sarpanch of Patto Hira Singh village and owner of Sujan Gym in Bagha Purana.
According to police and eyewitnesses, the attack took place around 10:30 am when Harpinder arrived at his gym in a Mahindra Thar. As he stepped out of the vehicle, four to five attackers travelling in a Toyota Fortuner opened fire at him.
Harpinder suffered six to seven bullet wounds in the attack. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but died during treatment.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Harpinder had reportedly received threats a day earlier and owned a bulletproof car. However, he arrived in a different, non-armoured vehicle on Friday when the attack took place.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
