A rare political face-off between husband and wife MLAs unfolded in Meghalaya Assembly, spotlighting delays in crucial livestock education projects. The debate highlighted urgent needs and government efforts to bolster the state's livestock sector.
A rare husband-wife face-off on the Assembly floor added political intrigue to a policy debate in Meghalaya on Wednesday, as NPP MLA Mehtab Chandee A Sangma pressed Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma over delays in key livestock education projects cleared by the cabinet three years ago.
Raising the issue during proceedings, the Gambegre legislator sought clarity on the status of a proposed veterinary college, two fishery colleges and a dairy college, all approved in 2022. She also drew attention to manpower shortages in veterinary training centres across the state.
The exchange stood out as one of the few instances where the legislator couple engaged in a pointed but measured debate inside the House.

Responding on behalf of the government, the chief minister said the institutions were conceived to strengthen Meghalaya’s livestock sector.
“These were the three colleges which we have decided because of the urgent need, keeping in mind that a large population of the state is engaged in livestock rearing,” he said.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
