Residents of Coimbatore allege storm drain work started without clearing road encroachments, risking future traffic congestion issues.
Residents of Ward 27 in Duraisamy Layout, Peelamedu, have raised concerns over an ongoing storm water drain project, alleging that construction began without removing encroachments that have narrowed the road.
According to the residents, following long-standing requests, a portion of the storm water drain project was approved in October 2025, and construction work commenced on February 19, 2026. However, on the 30-ft road connecting Duraisamy Layout to Avarampalayam Road, the entrance near the main road has been reduced to around 21 ft due to encroachments on both sides.
The residents submitted a petition to the assistant engineer on 6 March, and a survey was conducted by officials on 9 March. They warned that if the drain is constructed without removing these encroachments, it could lead to traffic congestion and other issues in the future.
A senior official from the town planning department said the survey confirmed that both sides of the road entrance are encroached. The report has been submitted to the engineering section for further action.
Residents demanded that the encroachments be removed and the storm water drain be completed along the full width of the road.
