Vehicles in the convoy of Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy were checked by officials of a Static Surveillance Team of the Election Commission of India at Aviyur police check post on Madurai-Thoothukudi highway on Thursday (May 19, 2026).
The Chief Minister was on his way to offer prayers at Sri Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur. When the convoy arrived at the Aviyur check post, the SST, led by P. Perumal, stopped the vehicles.
When the SST officials told the police personnel in the convoy that the vehicles had to be checked, some of them reportedly objected to it. They claimed that as per the protocol of the Chief Minister, his vehicle should not be checked.
However, the SST officials said they had got instruction from the District Election Officer to check all passing vehicles as the Model Code of Conduct was in force ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
Finally, the police personnel in the convoy allowed the officials to check the vehicles.
An official said Mr. Rangasamy, who was seated in the front seat of his vehicle, cooperated with the SST officials without uttering a word. The checking process was quickly done after which the vehicles left for Tiruchendur.
