A massive protest erupted in Jaipur against UGC regulations, with demonstrators marching towards the Chief Minister's residence.
A massive protest erupted in Jaipur on Sunday against a decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC), with a large number of people taking to the streets under the banner of Sarv Samaj and demanding the rollback of the decision.
The protesters announced a march towards the Chief Minister’s residence, triggering alertness within the administration and police. As demonstrators began moving ahead from the Shaheed Smarak area, the Jaipur Police swung into action. The police had already deployed heavy security and installed barricades at Shaheed Smarak to prevent the crowd from proceeding further.
Tension escalated when protesters attempted to move towards the Chief Minister’s residence, leading to pushing and scuffles between the police and the demonstrators. The protesters continued sloganeering and remained firm on their demand that the UGC withdraw its decision. As the situation threatened to worsen, the police resorted to strict measures to control the crowd, though the situation was later brought under control.
The protesters said the UGC decision was against the interests of students, teachers, and society at large. They staged a sit-in under the banner of Sarv Samaj and demanded immediate intervention by the government in the matter.
The agitators warned that if the UGC decision was not withdrawn, they would intensify the protest in the coming days.
The new regulations notified by the UGC mandate all higher education institutions to form "equity committees" to look into discrimination complaints and promote equity.
