Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Adampur Airport and renamed it after Sri Sant Guru Ravidas Ji in a bid to to honour the revered saint and social reformer on his birth anniversary. He also inaugurated the new terminal building at Halwara Airport in Ludhiana.
"On the auspicious occasion of the 649th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas ji, the renaming of Adampur Airport honours the revered saint and social reformer whose teachings of equality, compassion, and human dignity continue to inspire India's social ethos," a statement from the PMO read.
The new terminal at Halwara is designed to enhance the aviation infrastructure in Punjab, providing a vital gateway for Ludhiana and its adjoining industrial and agricultural areas.
Halwara Airport is located in Ludhiana district and also hosts a strategic Indian Air Force station, further increasing the significance of the civil enclave.
Previously, Ludhiana’s airport operated with a smaller runway, which limited its capacity to handle only small-size aircraft.
The newly developed civil enclave at Halwara features a longer runway, now capable of accommodating A320-type aircrafts to improve regional connectivity.
