More than 190 Opposition MPs have submitted notices in both Houses of Parliament seeking a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Opposition MPs have submitted notices in both Houses of Parliament seeking a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, sources said on Friday.
According to the PTI sources, more than 190 Opposition MPs have backed the move, including 130 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha MPs who have signed the notice.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has also received a notice from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the motion against the CEC. The scrutiny process of the notice is expected to begin shortly.
Sources said the signatories include MPs from all INDIA bloc parties. The Aam Aadmi Party has also backed the move despite no longer being formally part of the opposition alliance. Some independent MPs have also signed the notice, while several others have expressed interest in joining the initiative.
This is the first time that a notice has been moved seeking the removal of a Chief Election Commissioner.
The notice lists seven charges against Kumar. These include allegations of “partial and discriminatory conduct in office”, “proven misbehaviour”, “deliberate obstruction of investigation of electoral fraud”, and “mass disenfranchisement”.

India on Monday said it has not held bilateral talks with the United States on deploying naval vessels to secure merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The clarification came after US President Donald Trump urged countries to send warships to keep the strategic waterway open amid tensions with Iran.
