OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says Indians top ChatGPT users in Asia, over 100 million use it every week

There was a time when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called India "hopeless". But now the company can no longer afford to ignore the country, as India has emerged as its second-largest market globally, with over 100 million weekly active users, just behind the US.
While the global AI race is largely seen as a battle between the US and China, India is steadily carving out its own place as a crucial player and an important market for companies like OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. In fact, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has revealed that 100 million people in India are now using ChatGPT every single week, making the country the biggest market in Asia by user base and second-largest market globally after the United States.
Altman shared these numbers ahead of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, where global tech leaders and policymakers are gathering to discuss AI’s growing role in education, business and governance, reports The Times of India. The 100 million weekly users from India are particularly significant given that the company has around 800 million weekly active users globally.
A big part of India becoming a big market for AI adoption is the young, digital-first population. With over a billion internet users and one of the world’s largest student communities, India offers fertile ground for AI adoption. Altman has repeatedly pointed to students as a key growth engine, noting that India has the largest number of student users on ChatGPT globally. From homework help and coding assistance to competitive exam preparation and language learning, AI tools are increasingly becoming part of everyday academic life.
As of this month, India has 100 million weekly active users, giving it the second-largest user base of any country in the world besides the US, Altman said while writing for TOI. “It has the largest number of students on ChatGPT worldwide, a sign of how many young people here are treating AI as a way to learn faster and get ahead. And it ranks fourth globally in the use of Prism, our free new tool for scientific research and collaboration.”
Notably, to leverage this young user base, OpenAI has also tweaked its pricing strategy to suit India’s price-sensitive market. The company launched a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go tier and later made it free for a year for Indian users, lowering the barrier to entry for millions.
To strengthen its Indian footprint, OpenAI also opened its New Delhi office in August 2025.

US authorities have arrested Super Micro Computer Co-founder Wally Liaw for allegedly smuggling $2.5 billion worth of Nvidia-powered AI servers to China. The case comes at a time when the US is tightening export rules to stop advanced AI hardware from reaching China amid the growing AI rivalry between the two countries.
