Meta says it is not killing Metaverse, but will let it fade away with time

Meta says it is not killing Metaverse, but will let it fade away with time

In less than two days, Meta has changed its mind on the Metaverse. The company has confirmed that it will not be shutting down its metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds for VR headsets. The announcement comes after Meta received feedback from users.

Meta has decided to change its mind on the Metaverse. After having announced that it was shutting down the project that has lost over $80 billion, Meta is bringing it back due to demand from users. According to Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, the company will continue to support Horizon Worlds – its Metaverse platform – for virtual reality (VR) headsets.

On Instagram, Bosworth stated that after listening to user feedback, the company was going to keep supporting VR headsets. He wrote, “We have decided, just today in fact, that we will keep Horizon Worlds working in VR for existing games to support the fans who’ve reached out.”

Meta had previously announced that Horizon Worlds will become a mobile-only platform from June 15, 2026, with no future support for VR. While Bosworth’s announcement confirms that users will be able to play Horizon Worlds on the Meta Quest VR headset for longer, the company is expected to prioritise mobile development.

Horizon Worlds was first launched in 2021 as a metaverse platform where users could interact in a 3D world environment. Many created their own games using Horizon Worlds. According to Bosworth, many fans reached out to Meta who were “heartbroken” by the company’s decision.

However, Meta will not be bringing any new futures to VR as it shifts completely towards mobile platforms. Bosworth explained, “The reason for that is because that's where most of the consumer and creator energy already was, and so we're kind of leaning into that.”

The company introduced a mobile version in 2023, aiming to compete with popular platforms like Roblox. The Horizon Worlds mobile version has recorded 45 million downloads worldwide.
