Not in Dubai; did actor Vijay Babu escape to Georgia?

According to reports, the actor accused in a sexual harassment case has likely escaped to Georgia. The country has no agreement with India to extradite criminals.

Malayalam film actor and producer Vijay Babu, who is accused in a sexual harassment case, has reportedly escaped to Georgia.

The police said that steps have been initiated to nab him amid reports that he has fled from Dubai, where he was believed to have been hiding since he was charged with rape following a woman’s complaint.

Georgia has no agreement with India to extradite criminals. It is believed that Vijay Babu escaped to Georgia realizing this loophole.

Earlier in the day, Vijay Babu had said in an e-mail that he would appear before the police. However, the Ministry of External Affairs cancelled his passport due to its failure. The action was taken following a request from the Kochi City Police.

Kochi City Police Commissioner CH. Nagaraju said that with the cancellation of Vijay Babu's passport, his visa is also cancelled. If Vijay Babu does not appear by May 24, a Red Corner Notice will be issued, the commissioner added.

A Red Corner Notice is issued by law enforcers of a country to seek the arrest or provisional arrest of wanted criminals with the intention of extraditing them to their home country to stand trial for crimes. Following the issuance of the arrest warrant, photographs of the actor-cum-producer, Vijay Babu, along with the case details in which he is accused, will appear on the website of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) in the coming days.
