No more free lunches? OpenAI starts putting ads in ChatGPT
India Today
Right after Anthropic indirectly took a jibe at OpenAI for wanting to put ads in ChatGPT, the Sam Altman-led startup has started showing ads in its chatbot. Here are the details.
The Super Bowl is one of the largest events of the year, particularly in the US. This year, however, AI was at the spotlight too. With Anthropic seemingly taking a dig at OpenAI for wanting to show ads in ChatGPT. Now, the Sam Altman-led AI startup has added ads to its chatbot anyway.
OpenAI shared a blog post, stating that it was going to start testing ads within ChatGPT from Monday, February 9. These advertisements will be shown only to free and ChatGPT Go users. The company has clarified that ads will not appear for ChatGPT Plus or Pro paid subscribers.
During the Super Bowl, Anthropic’s ad, which had been uploaded on YouTube a few days ago, shows an AI persona giving advice to a user, before quickly giving an advertisement as a recommendation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has clarified previously that ChatGPT will not show ads in such a manner.
OpenAI addressed concerns in a press release, stating, “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you, and we keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers,” and, “We’re starting with a test to learn, listen, and make sure we get the experience right.” According to OpenAI, ads will be matched to users based on the topics of their conversations and past chats, but advertisers will not have access to individual chat data.
From a technical standpoint, OpenAI says, “Ads in ChatGPT will be ‘clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated’ from the answer.” The company has implemented safeguards to prevent ads from appearing alongside “sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics.”
OpenAI says that users will have the control to stop getting personalised ads, or to understand why they are being shown a certain advertisement in particular. Users will also be able to delete their ad data from the chatbot.

Reddit is exploring biometric verification methods such as Face ID and Touch ID to ensure users are real humans, not bots, while pledging to maintain the platform's tradition of anonymity. CEO Steve Huffman said the company is planning to address the rising influence of AI-generated content and protect authentic user engagement.

In a push towards more inclusive school environments, the Central Board of Secondary Education has rolled out fresh directives on menstrual hygiene across its affiliated institutions. The move comes after a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of India that places menstrual health within the framework of fundamental rights.
