The city’s much-anticipated Namma Metro Pink Line, initially expected to be operational in 2020 and then pushed to December 2025, will once again miss the deadline.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) now says the corridor will become functional in two stages — the elevated section stretching 7.5 km between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere will open by March 2026, while the 13.8-km underground segment from Dairy Circle to Nagawara is slated for completion by September 2026.
The Pink Line, spanning a total of 21.3 km, is part of Phase 2 of the city’s metro network expansion. It aims to connect the southern point of Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road with Nagawara on the Outer Ring Road in the northern part of the city.
According to BMRCL officials, the alignment includes 13.8 km of underground track and 7.5 km of elevated viaduct.
The BMRCL had floated the tender for the construction of the 7.5 km of the elevated stretch in 2017.
Despite visible progress in laying tracks and undertaking civil works on parts of the line, officials have acknowledged that the underground portion posed significant engineering challenges.
The tunnelling process, they said, was especially arduous owing to Bengaluru’s rocky terrain. “The soil conditions include large granite and dolerite boulders. While granite is already extremely hard, dolerite is even more difficult to drill through,” a senior official said.
