A viral video showing namaz inside an under-construction municipal hall in Joshimath has sparked objections from Hindu groups, prompting administrative review and appeals for communal harmony.
A video showing namaz being offered inside an under-construction municipal building in Uttarakhand's Joshimath has gone viral on social media, triggering objections from Hindu organisations and raising communal sensitivity in the area.
The incident is reported to have taken place late Wednesday evening in the Meeth Bazaar area, where a hall of the under-construction Nagar Palika building is being developed.
According to local residents, members of a particular community offered namaz inside the hall. In the viral video, several people can be seen praying inside the partially built structure.
Locals claim that the building is currently being constructed as a table tennis (TT) hall for players. Questions have been raised over the use of a government building for religious activities.
After the video surfaced on Wednesday night, Hindu organisations held a meeting with the police administration and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chandrashekhar Vashishtha on Thursday, expressing strong objections.
Taking note of the matter, the administration said it is examining the issue and appealed to both sides to maintain harmony.
