Lili Soren and her husband encountered six wild bears while foraging. One attacked Malde, causing serious head injuries, prompting Lili to bravely confront the animal.
A 41-year-old tribal woman in Odisha displayed extraordinary courage when she fought off a ferocious wild bear with an axe to save her husband’s life in a dense forest, turning a routine foraging trip into a dramatic fight for survival. Forest officials lauded the woman's courage as something "remarkable in the face of grave danger".
The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Hatisalabeda forest near Milu village under the Karanjia forest range.
Lili Soren and her husband, 48-year-old Malde Soren, had entered the forest to collect leaves and leafy vegetables when they saw the area invaded by a group of six wild bears.
According to local sources, one of the animals suddenly charged at Malde, knocking him down and inflicting severe head injuries.
With her husband bleeding from deep scalp wounds, Lili chose to confront the animal instead of fleeing.
Armed with the traditional axe she was carrying, she repeatedly struck the bear in an attempt to force it away.

The girl told police that her neighbour, Maulana Islam, used to sexually assault her when she was alone at home and threatened her, which is why she did not disclose the matter to her family. Doctors informed her parents that she was pregnant after she was rushed to the hospital with severe abdominal pain.
