IMD announces early monsoon onset over Andaman, setting stage for swift progress across India. The monsoon might reach Telangana by June first week
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday (May 13, 2025) announced the onset of the southwest monsoon over the South East Bay of Bengal, South Andaman Sea, and Nicobar Islands, nine days ahead of its usual schedule. This marks one of the earliest onset of the monsoon over India, setting the stage for its further progress across the mainland.
Speaking to The Hindu, Y.K. Reddy, former head of the Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad, explained that while the monsoon officially begins with its arrival over the Kerala coast, the early onset in the Andaman region is a key indicator of its pace. “The monsoon is expected to reach Kerala by May 27, which is also ahead of schedule. From there, it typically takes 7 to 10 days to advance into Telangana,” he said.
Based on current projections, southern parts of Telangana could start experiencing monsoon conditions between June 3 and June 8. “Unless there is a drastic shift in weather patterns, which can happen occasionally, the monsoon should reach South Telangana around June 5,” Mr. Reddy said, adding that the northern parts of the State could see its arrival two to three days later.
He said that after hitting Kerala, the monsoon can sometimes slow down or pause briefly, which may delay its movement by a few days. “That’s why we generally keep a buffer of four to five days in our estimates,” he said.
