Modi inaugurates renovated Sholavandan railway station
Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a video conference from Madurai Airport on Sunday inaugurated new infrastructure development works worth ₹ 9.86 crore carried out at Sholavandan Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Serving the residents of Sholavandan and its surrounding rural and semi-urban areas, the station provides a vital rail connectivity to one of the State’s most prominent urban and cultural hubs. As an essential rail corridor, it facilitates daily travel for education, trade, and regional mobility.
Some of the important facelifting works carried out at the station were installation of two lifts serving platforms 1, 2, and 3, a new ticket lounge building, development of the waiting hall to enhance passenger comfort, raising and resurfacing of platforms 1 and 2 to enhance passenger safety and for ease of boarding and alighting, development of the approach road, bike parking facility and a compound wall.
Officials highlighting other important new facilities like a new second entry to the railway station to decongest the main entrance and improve passenger flow and installation of an Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS) comprising 48 coach indication boards, seven display TVs, 2 GPS clocks, a public address system and 26 speakers to ensure real-time dissemination of train information said, “The new facilities at the station are to improve the overall passenger experience by ensuring seamless navigation, reducing terminal congestion, and providing better accessibility.”
Arooba Jeyasree, a teacher at Railway School, said the new toilet facilities which had been opened at the station provides hygiene environment to both men, women and children.
“Though it was usable earlier, due to lack of proper maintenance it was not up to the standard. But now the assurance for a clean toilet is promising for the locals and students who would be using the station every day,” she added.
