A Hosangadi resident loses ₹1.8 lakh to a fraudster impersonating a former friend, leading to a police complaint.
A 29-year-old resident of Hosangadi village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district lost ₹1.8 lakh to a fraudster claiming to be an old friend.
The victim said he had been in a three-year relationship with a girl from Hosanagar. However, due to his parents’ disapproval of their marriage, they decided to part ways. On his birthday, October 24, 2025, he received a message from the mobile number associated with the girl from Hosanagar.
Assuming that this was his friend from Hosanagara, he continued to chat with her. Subsequently, the latter reportedly informed him about a problem in her house, and he transferred a total of ₹1.8 lakh during the period between November 3, 2025 and February 13, 2026.
The victim then noted that she stopped answering his calls and chatted with him in an indifferent manner on the messaging app. The victim then filed a cheating complaint with the Amasebail police station, which registered it for offences under Sections 318 (4) and 319 (2) of Bharaitya Nyaya Sanhita.
