Manipur is peaceful, dialogue between Kuki and Meitei communities initiated: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah updates Rajya Sabha on peace in Manipur, dialogue between Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities initiated.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (March 21, 2025) informed the Rajya Sabha that peace prevailed in Manipur and dialogue between the two communities has been initiated.

Mr. Shah said he sincerely hoped that through dialogue the distance and division between the Kuki-Zo and the Meitei community would be bridged in the near future.

Responding to the discussion on the working of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Rajya Sabha the Minister said he would give a detailed response on the situation in Manipur when he tables the proclamation of President’s Rule next week.

Manipur was placed under President’s Rule on February 13.

More than 250 people have been killed in the ethnic violence between the Meitei and the tribal Kuki-Zo people that erupted in the State on May 3, 2023.

“We will discuss Manipur when I seek the House’s permission on President’s Rule in the State. I want to assure that Manipur is peaceful now, dialogue between both the communities has started,” Mr. Shah said.

On March 11 and March 12, MHA officials separately met Kuki-Zo and Meitei civil society groups in Manipur in the aftermath of the blockade of national highways by the Kuki-Zo groups. The civil society groups were informed about the roadmap prepared by the Centre to usher in normalcy in the State.
