Total Laryngectomy survivors set a world record by reciting the national anthem at a Hyderabad cancer hospital on India's 77th Republic Day.
Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute in Hyderabad on Monday (January 26, 2026) hosted what has been officially recognised as a world record National Anthem recital by ‘total laryngectomy’ survivors. The event marked India’s 77th Republic Day and was certified by the World Book of Records, London.
The event was attended by Nandamuri Balakrishna, chairman and managing trustee of the Nandamuri Basava Taraka Ramarao Memorial Cancer Foundation along with noted radiation oncologist Nori Dattatreyudu.
Laryngeal cancer, a form of head and neck cancer, shows wide regional variation in India. According to Indian cancer registry data, the age-adjusted incidence in men ranges from 1.26 to 8.18 per 100,000 population depending on the region. It accounts for about 3 to 6% of all cancers in Indian males and 0.2 to 1% in females. Global estimates from GLOBOCAN 2020 indicate an age-standardised rate in India of approximately 4.55 per 100,000 men and 0.67 per 100,000 women.
The survivors rendered ‘Jana Gana Mana’ using electrolarynx devices and tracheoesophageal voice prostheses, demonstrating the success of voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy.
