Kerala Health Minister Veena George was allegedly mobbed and injured during a protest by the Kerala Students' Union (KSU) at Kannur railway station on Wednesday, resulting in her getting admitted to a government hospital and drawing sharp condemnation from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The protest was held against the minister over alleged lapses in the state’s Health Department following a medical negligence controversy in Alappuzha. The incident occurred as George arrived at the railway station to board a train.
Police sources told India Today that opposition activists gathered at the station and surrounded the minister, leading to chaotic scenes.
Visuals showed her caught amid a crowd of protesters while police personnel attempted to escort her through the station.
The situation escalated quickly, with officers struggling to move her away from the demonstrators.
State Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer, who was present at the scene, told reporters that "the minister suffered injuries to her hand and neck".
