On Saturday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sought the opinions of Vice-Chancellors of public universities in the State, at a meeting which was also attended by Chancellor, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot.
The Chief Minister cited examples of Australia and some European countries that have imposed curbs on social media and mobile phone use for minors, and asked the Vice-Chancellors what they thought about such a move.
“We are seeing students being influenced by social media a lot these days. Many countries have already done it,” Mr. Siddaramaiah said.
He also pointed to youth falling into the trap of drugs, referring to the influence of mobile phones, social media, and content related to drug use and other harmful habits.
The issue has come into focus even as the State government is planning to launch an initiative called ‘Mobile bidi pustaka hidi’ (Put down your mobile and pick up a book), aimed at reducing screen time for children and inculcating the habit of reading.
