Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds charge of the Finance Department, said that the State government will allocate ₹44 crore more to the Department for the Empowerment of Differently-Abled and Senior Citizens in the upcoming supplementary estimates to the Budget.
He was speaking after inaugurating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities here on Tuesday.
This comes after recent criticism over massive cuts to allocation to the department in the 2024-25 Budget. Compared to the ₹55 crore allocated in 2023-24, the department was allocated only ₹10 crore in the 2024-25 Budget. This had hampered several welfare programmes for persons with disabilities, it was alleged. With the assurance of ₹44 crore in the supplementary estimates, the allocation will again jump to ₹54 crore.
The State government on Tuesday symbolically launched a new programme that provides ₹1,000 monthly allowance for caregivers of persons with disabilities. This programme was announced in the 2024-25 Budget.
Mr. Siddaramaiah also said the government will write to the Union government appealing for an increase in the monthly allowance to persons with physical and mental disabilities. Presently, those with 40% to 74% disability are being given a monthly allowance of ₹800 and those with over 75% disability ₹1,400, and persons with mental disabilities are given ₹2,000.
A comprehensive document detailing rights and opportunities available to persons with disabilities in Karnataka, and a braille calendar for 2025 was launched at the event.
Aligned with the United Nations Organisation - 2024 theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”, the event underscored the importance of enabling persons with disabilities to become their own advocates. Fifteen differently-abled individuals who have excelled in the fields of sports, education, and culture were given state awards.
