Over two months after ordering suspension of 18 BJP MLAs for their “indiscipline” and showing “disrespect” to the Chair, Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader on Sunday (May 25) revoked their suspension.
Following this, all the six conditions imposed on these MLAs have been withdrawn with immediate effect. An official notification revoking their suspension was issued by the Assembly Secretariat.
The decision was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Speaker. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who is also the Leader of the House; Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar; Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Manappa Lamani; Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H.K. Patil, and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr. Khader said the suspension had been revoked as the MLAs had realised their mistake and expressed regret.
“We have revoked the suspension hoping they will not repeat such acts of indiscipline in the House. They have expressed regret and said their behaviour was not intentional. Apart from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, several BJP members, including Mr. Ashok, Shobha Karandlaje, Pralhad Joshi, and S. Suresh Kumar, have also appealed that the suspension be revoked,” he said.
On March 21 during the Budget session, the MLAs were suspended for six months from the House after they created a ruckus, protesting against the “honey trap” allegations made by Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna.
During the protest, these MLAs climbed onto the Speaker’s podium, tore official documents, and threw papers — actions deemed as showing disrespect to the Chair, following which they were forcibly evicted from the House by marshals. The BJP had demanded a CBI probe into the issue.
