What began as a celebration in Maliyanta village, Madhya Pradesh, ended tragically when Lalit Singh, 41, died after choking on a rasgulla, plunging the community into mourning.
A joyous wedding celebration in a Jharkhand village turned into a scene of grief late on Friday night when 41-year-old Lalit Singh tragically died after choking on a rasgulla during the wedding feast.
Lalit Singh had attended the wedding ceremony around 1 am on Friday, enjoying the celebrations and food with fellow villagers. Witnesses say he was eating a rasgulla when it suddenly got lodged in his throat, causing immediate difficulty in breathing.
“The moment it happened, his face turned pale and he started gasping,” said one relative present at the scene. Panic spread through the gathering as family and villagers attempted to dislodge the sweet from his throat.
Despite frantic efforts at the venue to free Lalit, they were unsuccessful. Seeing his condition worsen, family members and villagers rushed him to the MGM Hospital. Doctors examined him immediately but were unable to revive him and declared him dead.
Doctors explained that the rasgulla had blocked his airway, preventing oxygen from reaching his body, which led to his sudden death. The post-mortem was conducted on Saturday, after which the body was handed over to the family.
The incident cast a pall over what should have been a day of celebration. Villagers and relatives expressed deep sorrow, with the joyous atmosphere of the wedding giving way to mourning.

This moment comes days after the Supreme Court allowed Harish Rana to die with dignity – a historic first court-ordered case of passive euthanasia in India. The court acknowledged the medical opinion that Rana will never recover and that the tubes that feed him and keep him alive are only prolonging his pain.
