IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan's rise continues to gather pace after his T20 World Cup heroics. Aakash Chopra has backed Sunrisers Hyderabad's decision to name him stand-in captain, calling it a fitting reward for his comeback journey.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has backed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s decision to appoint Ishan Kishan as stand-in captain for IPL 2026. Chopra described the move as a “beautiful story”, highlighting Kishan’s journey from being out of favour to leading a major franchise.
SRH confirmed that regular skipper Pat Cummins will miss the opening few matches due to a lower back injury. In his absence, Kishan has been handed the captaincy, with Abhishek Sharma named as his deputy.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra praised the franchise for trusting a player who has consistently delivered across formats and levels.
“Ishan Kishan has been made the captain now, and isn't this a beautiful story? A guy who was just working hard by keeping his head down, who was only doing his job,” Chopra said.
“In my opinion, they have done absolutely the right thing because they have gone towards a player with a proven track record,” he added.
He highlighted how Kishan’s performances at the domestic level and his return to the Indian team paved the way for this opportunity.
